Bentonsport, one of the Villages of Van Buren County, is an historic community which sits on the Des Moines River in southern Iowa. During its heyday as an important port-of-call for Des Moines River steamers, the town once had a population of over 500 residents. Today the community is much smaller, but many of the historic buildings and homes are still in use. Details about the community are available on the Bentonsport National Historic District website.
Specialty shops are open from April through October and on weekends into December.
Many old structures, such as the historic bridge, have been preserved thanks to the efforts of the Bentonsport Improvement Association. The 1882 bridge is open to foot traffic.
This historic church sits high on a hill above town, just up the road from the Cowles house. The restoration and preservation of this church is another project of the Bentonsport Improvement Association.
The gazebo sits beside the Des Moines River in the park which is across the street from the specialty shops.
Community and family gatherings often take place in the pavilion next to the historic bridge.
Volunteers have also created a beautiful rose garden in the old mill foundation that sits beside the river. This water garden sits in one corner of the garden.
